Palm Beach - The Basin - Mackerel

Myra at Palm Beach Wharf

Ferries depart Palm Beach hourly to this wonderful isolated haven in the Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park on the Western Foreshores of Pittwater.

The first two stops Bennett Wharf and Bonnie Doon are the gateway to Coasters Retreat. This small community contains both Full time and Part time residents who enjoy their waterfront retreats looking North East towards Lion Island and Palm Beach.

The third stop is the most popular of all, it is The Basin camping and picnic ground. The Basin is perfect for a day out with family and friends and can even cater for large groups such as Weddings and School groups. The Basin caters for 400 campers on non powered sites as well as Acres of unspoilt beauty in the National Park. The amenities at the Basin include toilets and showers, laundry, electric BBQs and under cover tables. Take your family and friends because the Basin caters for all ages with the sheltered and netted swimming areas, bush walking trails, Indigenous engravings, fishing sights and native wildlife including Kangaroos, Wallabies, Goannas, Koalas and much much more…

Fourth stop on this journey is a little hideaway called Currawong Beach. This beach is home to the Currawong Cottages. These cottages are a step up from camping but by no means 5 star. When you stay here you really feel like you are at one with nature. There is all the wildlife of the Basin plus a tennis Court, 6 hole Golf course, Volleyball and lots to do. Enjoy your own private Beach for a spot of swimming and sun baking or try your hand at fishing from the Wharf. It’s a reality check to come and meet the ferry in the morning to collect your Milk and Papers to see what is happening in the world whilst you are relaxing at this the charm of Pittwater.

The last stop on the ferry route is the famous Mackerel Beach. There are over 50 homes at Mackerel Beach half of which are lived in full time. Mackerel has a great sandy beach that is perfect for the children and is the starting point for numerous bushwalks leading up to the Basin or West Head lookout. Come to stay at Mackerel for the day or hire a house and make a week of it, either way you won’t be disappointed.

The ferry departs Palm Beach hourly 7days a week, join us to experience one of these amazing destinations first hand or stay onboard the ferry and marvel at the Beauty of Pittwater and the Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park.
